Jekyll defends Hyde

  • Jekyll explains that Hyde’s situation is unique and cannot be solved by talking. He also insists that the “moment I choose I can be rid of Mr Hyde.”

Chapter 4: The Carew Murder Case

Here's a summary of what happens in Chapter 4:

Maid's testimony

Maid's testimony

  • Almost a year later, a terrible crime takes place. A maid witnesses everything.
  • She sees Hyde wildly beat an old man (Carew) with his foot, and then with a cane.
  • The maid faints in shock at the sound of Mr Carew's bones cracking on the ground.
Police visit

Police visit

  • Mr Utterson, Carew’s lawyer, accompanies a police officer to the crime scene.
  • He recognises the body as Sir Danvers Carew and the broken walking stick as one that he gave to Dr Jekyll some years before.
    • This is another clue that links Hyde to Jekyll, so Mr Utterson takes the police to Hyde’s house.
  • A silver-haired woman answers and says that Hyde is not in the house and that they are not allowed into his rooms.
Inspecting Hyde's room

Inspecting Hyde's room

  • Utterson tells the lady that an Inspector from Scotland Yard (head of police) is with him, and the woman eventually lets them up.
  • In Hyde’s room, Utterson notices that there are ashes in the fireplace. This indicates that Hyde has burned some documents and has made a quick exit, leaving his clothes strewn all over the floor.
  • Utterson finds two more pieces of evidence that suggest that Hyde murdered Carew: the other half of the walking stick and a burnt cheque book. Utterson is determined to find Hyde.
